President Mohamed Irfaan Ali met on Tuesday with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, with talks focusing on regional security, trade and hemispheric issues.

The leaders underscored the importance of the existing strategic partnership in tackling narco-terrorism and transnational crime, while also reviewing developments in Haiti and Cuba.

Ali and Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ role as a key trade partner for Guyana and discussed progress in ongoing negotiations for a new trade agreement, which both sides said should be mutually beneficial.

The two countries also pledged to continue working closely in multilateral forums to address wider global challenges.
