Police in Region Six are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two young men early Sunday morning on the No. 11 Public Road, East Coast Berbice.
The crash occurred around 01:40 hrs on September 14, 2025, and involved motor car HC 4710, owned by Arvin Tyman, 39, of Lot 114 B Sixth Street, Whim, Corentyne Berbice, and driven at the time by a 48-year-old man of Lancaster Village, Corentyne; and motorcycle CP 8880, owned and driven by 29-year-old Kris Ramphal of Lot 97 Fyrish Road, Corentyne Berbice. Riding pillion on the motorcycle was 18-year-old Malcolm Pirtan of Lot 135 Fyrish Village, Corentyne Berbice. Both men died as a result of the collision.
According to initial police investigations, the car was proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a normal speed, while the motorcycle was heading in the opposite direction, allegedly at a fast rate.
Investigators were informed that the motorcycle was being driven without a headlight, and that both Ramphal and Pirtan were not wearing safety helmets.
Reports suggest that the motorcycle switched from the southern lane to the northern lane, resulting in a head-on collision despite attempts by the car driver to avoid impact.
As a result of the crash, Ramphal and Pirtan were flung onto the northern side of the roadway, sustaining severe injuries. Public-spirited citizens rushed to their aid and transported them in an unconscious condition to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
However, both men were pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor. Their bodies are now at a funeral home awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Meanwhile, police ranks contacted the driver of motor car HC 4710 at the scene.
He was subsequently arrested and escorted to the Central Police Station, where a breathalyzer test was conducted.
The test revealed 4 and 5 micrograms of alcohol in his system. He remains in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.
