Police have identified a body discovered last week at the Melanie Seawall on Guyana’s East Coast Demerara as that of 54-year-old Christopher Andrew Sergeant, a driver employed with the Guyana Revenue Authority.

Sergeant’s wife, 66-year-old pensioner Rosanna Phillips, identified the remains on September 8 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, police said in a statement. The identification was witnessed by a detective sergeant and government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

Dr. Singh conducted a post-mortem examination but said the cause of death was inconclusive due to the advanced state of decomposition. The body was later released to relatives for burial.

Sergeant’s remains were first discovered on September 2 by a 17-year-old motorcyclist from Non-Pariel, who noticed the body while riding along the seawall. He alerted a neighbour, 61-year-old Brian Chin, who contacted police.

The body was found lying face-up, clad in a white T-shirt, vest, and blue jeans. Both wrists and insteps were missing, and the face had decomposed to the bone. Police said no marks of violence were observed.
