As Guyana observes World Suicide Prevention Day under the theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” calls are being made to put an end to the scourge.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) notes that suicide is a major public health challenge, claiming the lives of more than 720,000 people every year. Each life lost, it says, carries profound social, emotional, and economic consequences, deeply affecting families, friends, workplaces, and communities.
This year’s theme calls on everyone to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide. The WHO emphasises that changing the narrative also means driving systemic change, urging governments and institutions to prioritise suicide prevention and mental health in public policy. This includes developing and implementing evidence-based strategies, improving access to quality care, and ensuring that those in distress receive the support they need.
Here in Guyana, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security today joined the global observance, reaffirming that suicide is not the answer. In a message to mark the occasion, the ministry encouraged persons seeking help to call its 914 hotline, where professionals are available to provide assistance.
The Childcare and Protection Agency also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives of children and young people, stressing that every life holds immeasurable value.
World Suicide Prevention Day, established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with the WHO, is observed annually on September 10. It focuses global attention on suicide prevention, uniting communities, organisations, and governments in the shared belief that suicides are preventable.
