Recount unlikely to ‘change election results one bit,’ says Jagdeo

With the recount of ballots for District Four (East Coast Demerara) still in progress, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, says he does not believe this will change the results already established at the September 1 polls.
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) began recounting ballots for the district on Thursday morning, following a request from the opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
While GECOM has declared results for all 10 administrative regions, it has not formally announced the winning party. Statements of Poll show the incumbent PPP/C in the lead.
Speaking at his weekly press briefing on Thursday, Dr. Jagdeo said he believes this is just another attempt to delay the inevitable.
“By now every Guyanese knows the results of the elections,” he said, adding that “We don’t believe it will change the results one bit,” Dr. Jagdeo said.
He added that the law as it relates to the recount has since been fully followed by GECOM.
“After that, the declaration will be made and President Ali will be sworn in,” he said.
If not satisfied following the recount process, Dr. Jagdeo said the opposition can request to go to the courts, but he does not foresee this happening.
The recount is being conducted at GECOM headquarters.
