The Private Sector Commission (PSC) said on Wednesday it was surprised by the request for a recount but pledged full support for the process, stressing it must be timely, efficient and transparent to maintain public confidence.

Both A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party have said they will seek recounts in several regions. The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has already approved a request from APNU for a recount in District Four of Region Four.

The PSC, which deployed observers to the elections, said it monitored polling day through the counting and tabulation of votes and reported no major problems. Local and international observers also raised no significant issues, while party agents from APNU, WIN and the ruling PPP/C flagged no concerns that were left unresolved.

“The PSC Observers Mission is satisfied with the conduct of the electoral process,” the group said in a statement, reiterating its commitment to free, fair and transparent elections.

The commission urged all political parties to show leadership, guide their supporters responsibly and promote peace throughout the recount.
