EU observers deployed across Guyana ahead of September 1 elections

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has begun deploying its short-term observers across Guyana in preparation for the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
Twenty short-term observers were dispatched today from Georgetown to cover all 10 administrative regions.
They join the mission’s 14 long-term observers, who have been stationed in Guyana since early August.
Together, the teams will monitor both urban and rural areas on election day, observing the polling process, the counting of ballots, and the tabulation of results.
Speaking to journalists outside the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre in Georgetown today, Chief Observer Robert Biedroń, a Member of the European Parliament from Poland, noted that the observers will serve as “the eyes and ears of the mission” during the electoral process.
“I welcome the short-term observers. You really have a lot on your shoulders because you will be our hearts and minds, wherever you will be, following closely, everything that’s going on election day,” he said.
Biedroń assured members of the media that the team will not interfere with the electoral process.
“We are here to observe this elections, we will not interfere in the process. Our goal is to observe,” he said.
The EU EOM’s work in Guyana is being led by Biedroń alongside a nine-member Core Team of election experts who arrived in Georgetown on July 23, following an invitation by the Government of Guyana.
Their mission is to provide an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process, contributing to transparency and confidence in the outcome of the elections.
The Chief Observer will present the EOM’s preliminary findings in a public statement two days after the elections, followed by a final report, including recommendations for improving the electoral process, which will be published after completion of the entire process.
