Belize’s elections chief leads CARICOM observer mission to Guyana

Belize’s Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai is leading a 10-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mission to observe Guyana’s general and regional elections on September 1, the bloc said on Friday.

The team, drawn from eight CARICOM member states, will monitor the vote from August 26 to September 3. Observers have already met with election officials, police, civil society groups and oversight bodies, and will hold talks with President Irfaan Ali and opposition representatives ahead of polling day.

On election day, the mission will observe voting, ballot counting and tabulation. A preliminary assessment will be released before the team departs on September 3, with a final report to follow.

CARICOM said the mission welcomed Guyana’s invitation and looked forward to supporting the country’s democratic process.
