The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is poised to secure a majority in Monday’s general election, General Secretary Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said on Thursday.
At the PPP/C’s final press conference before the polls, Dr Jagdeo said the government had delivered “transformative progress” in Amerindian villages, citing more than $14 billion distributed to over 240 communities in the past three years from Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) revenues.
He stressed that the funds were controlled by the villages themselves through community-approved development plans. “That doesn’t look like passive recipients of aid,” Dr Jagdeo said. “That’s active engagement. Over 2,000 projects have been implemented—planned, managed, and accounted for by the communities themselves.”
Dr Jagdeo contrasted this with opposition attempts to block access to LCDS funds and criticised sections of the media for “biased coverage.”
He pointed to new schools, hospitals, dormitories, roads, tractors and solar panels distributed in hinterland areas. “The Amerindian communities today are better off than at any point in history, and the people themselves will tell you that,” he said.
The PPP/C leader said more than 5,000 Amerindians have secured part-time jobs with government support since 2020, though he acknowledged employment remains uneven. “Go to Region Nine, go to Mabaruma, and you will see the roads, the schools, the hospitals. Compare that to what existed in 2020. The changes are visible,” he said.
Dr Jagdeo dismissed opposition claims that the PPP/C has failed hinterland communities, accusing APNU and the new We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party of “collaboration” until recently. “For four months, APNU never criticised WIN. Now suddenly, they say Mohamed is corrupt? Clearly, they’ve redone their numbers and realised the PPP is headed for a majority,” he said, calling the opposition “in total disarray.”
He also attacked WIN for refusing to name a prime ministerial candidate, describing it as “a family business enterprise.”
With the vote days away, Dr Jagdeo urged supporters not to be swayed by “false narratives” or threats. “Do not take risks with your future,” he said. “We’ve built progress in every community, and we will continue to do so. The PPP is the only party capable of keeping Guyana united, safe, and moving forward.”
