Dhankumarie Persaud and her two sons shared a moment of pride as they graduated together after completing the City and Guilds Basic Electrical Installation and Plumbing courses. The ceremony was held at the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI).
“It is also a proud moment because I have my two sons here with me, one completed electrical training and the other completed the plumbing training. I feel really overwhelmed and happy because of having an international certificate- all three of us,” the proud mother said.
They were among 46 men and women who successfully completed the rigorous programmes, designed to open doors to new career opportunities in high-demand technical fields. Of the graduates, 21 completed the Electrical Installation course—comprising 14 women and seven men—while 25 graduated in Plumbing, including 10 women and 15 men. The free courses were offered through the Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN), in partnership with Nations Inc.
Daphne Taylor, another graduate, who earned a certificate in Basic Electrical Installation, and her daughter, who secured a certificate in Basic Plumbing, were equally delighted with their achievement.
“Today I can say that I am happy to complete a course that I had no knowledge of. And I am a proud mother because I can be able to stand beside my daughter to say I have completed this course and I am happy for this certificate. I wouldn’t stop here, I will keep going,” she noted.
Human Services and Social Security Minister, Dr Vindhya Persaud, commended the graduates’ success and underscored the importance of women entering non-traditional sectors such as construction.
WIIN, which surpassed its target of training 500 women last year, announced that it is expanding its efforts in 2025 to provide even more opportunities for skills development, aiming to break barriers and build sustainable futures for both women and men across Guyana.
