ERC urges political leaders, supporters to discourage hostility toward opponents

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on Tuesday called on political leaders and supporters to respect freedom of association and discourage hostility towards their opponents.

The Commission in a statement warns that intimidation and harassment pose a threat to national unity.

The appeal comes six days before Guyanese head to the polls to elect a government of their choice.

The ERC reminded voters that the Constitution guarantees the right to join, support, and openly express allegiance to any political party, including by wearing paraphernalia, attending rallies, and participating in political activities without fear.

“Any form of intimidation, verbal abuse, harassment, or violence aimed at individuals because of their political preference is a direct violation of the laws of Guyana,” the Commission said in a statement.

It urged campaigners and supporters to set the tone by rejecting hostility toward political opponents, including online, and encouraged respectful dialogue as a hallmark of a healthy democracy.

Reaffirming its role in promoting harmony, the ERC said all Guyanese share responsibility for ensuring the 2025 elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect, and dignity.
