The government announced plans on Friday to unlock 100,000 acres of farmland in Berbice as part of a five-year strategy to boost the region’s agricultural sector.

PPP General Secretary and Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo revealed the plans during a public meeting attended by thousands of supporters.

“Right here we have 26,000 acres at Skeldon—the old GuySuCo project—and another 40,000 acres among co-ops in the Crabwood Creek area. We plan to build a road from here all the way to Moleson Creek and Orealla to open up more lands, and to get all of these lands into agriculture, open up about 100,000 acres of land righto here,” he said.

The initiative also aims to create jobs through agro-processing and infrastructure development.

“Maybe even building a wharf here to ship directly out of the Corentyne. This is about more jobs, better paying jobs,” Jagdeo said.

The project is expected to stimulate the local economy, encourage sustainable growth and improve livelihoods in the Corentyne region.
