The construction of homes for young people is a top priority for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic once re-elected, General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said.
Speaking at his weekly press briefing at Freedom House on Thursday, Dr. Jagdeo spoke about a number of opportunities the party will be extending to young people.
“We want every young person to own a home. So that means the government will have to work with them to ensure that house lots are prepared, and then we’ve already made it clear the support for the construction of homes in the next term will be a big part of our manifesto. We’ve already promised it months ago. So that will be important,” he said.
Dr. Jagdeo said the party is focused on ensuring citizens have more spending money in their pockets, as he made the promise for employees in the public and private sectors to receive more benefits as it relates to salaries and other increases.
He explained that while miners are currently receiving a great level of assistance, they—as well as fishermen—will continue to benefit in a different way.
“The miners, people in the fisheries sector, forestry, agriculture will get greater benefits. For example, the fishermen. We’re planning to assist them with greater input. The taxation system would evolve in a way that if you make more money you are going to keep more of that money. The tax benefits are going to be extended to the mining, agriculture and fisheries sector,” the General Secretary said.
He noted too that these sectors will receive direct input assistance from the government.
“So if you get the seed paddy from government that means you don’t have to spend your money. When you sell your rice or your crop, you keep more money for yourself. That is all with keeping more money in people’s pockets,” he re-emphasised.
