Major Dwighton Bess of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has successfully completed the prestigious Command and General Staff Officer Course (CGSOC) at the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The year-long programme, which ran from June 2024 to June 2025, is internationally recognised for shaping mid-level officers into strategic leaders capable of operating in complex joint and multinational environments. Participants undergo rigorous training in large-scale combat operations, operational planning, and interagency coordination, a release said.

Major Bess distinguished himself not only by completing the demanding core curriculum but also by earning two additional certificates—one in National Security Policy and Strategy, and another in Inter-Agency Studies—further enhancing his proficiency in contemporary security affairs.

He was one of 139 international military officers selected from 93 countries and part of a cohort of nearly 1,000 students. His performance and professionalism have brought pride to the Guyana Defence Force and stand as a testament to his personal dedication.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, along with the officers and ranks of the GDF, extended heartfelt congratulations to Major Bess on this notable achievement.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Brigadier Khan stated: “He has represented Guyana and the GDF with distinction and returns equipped with the knowledge and perspective to strengthen the Force at a strategic level.”

The GDF commended Major Bess on reaching this important milestone and looks forward to his continued service and leadership as the organisation advances its strategic objectives at home and across the region.
