Police in the Springlands Police Station District are continuing their investigation after a 12-gauge shotgun was discovered abandoned by two unidentified men during a late-night patrol on Tuesday.
According to reports, at about 21:30 hrs, Detective Fraser, Detective Constable Sukdeo, and Detective Constable Watson were on patrol in an unmarked vehicle in the vicinity of Hastoo Street, Number 67 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, when they observed two men riding a black motorcycle without a visible registration number.
Notably, the pillion rider was seen holding a white bag containing an unidentified item. Acting on suspicion, the ranks shouted at the men to stop and exited their vehicle. However, upon seeing the approaching officers, the pillion rider threw the bag into a nearby clump of bushes before the men sped off on the motorcycle, escaping to an unknown location.
Constable Sukdeo retrieved the discarded white bag and, in the presence of his colleagues, opened it to find a 12-gauge shotgun inside. The firearm, which had no visible serial number or make, was immediately taken to the Springlands Police Station, where it was marked, sealed, and lodged as evidence pending further investigation.
Police have since launched an intensive effort to locate the suspects and determine the origin of the illegal firearm.
Tuesday night’s discovery highlights the ongoing challenge law enforcement faces in tackling illegal firearms in Berbice and across the country. In recent years, the Guyana Police Force has intensified its operations to remove unlicensed weapons from communities, in an effort to curb gun-related crimes.
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or information that may aid investigators in apprehending the suspects involved.
