Construction worker charged with armed robbery, possession of smoking utensil

Akash Parsaram, also known as “Samsung,” a 21-year-old construction worker from Success, East Coast Demerara, was on Tuesday charged with robbery under arms and possession of a smoking utensil.

Parsaram was arrested on Monday by ranks from the Beterverwagting Police Station following an incident in which he allegedly robbed a 16-year-old trainee woodworker.

According to police, Parsaram is accused of robbing the teenager of one cellular phone valued at $26,000, a leather wallet worth $3,000, and $10,000 in cash. The charge was laid under Section 222(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 08:01.

He appeared before Her Worship Ms. Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court Two, where the charge was read to him. Parsaram pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to August 20, 2025, for report.

In a separate matter, Parsaram was also charged with possession of a smoking utensil, contrary to Section 12(1)(d)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

He appeared before the same magistrate and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined $6,000.
