Persons living with disabilities in Region Six are sowing seeds of empowerment by participating in Sustainable Agriculture Training offered through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

For many participants, it’s more than just farming, but about unlocking new possibilities, building confidence, and gaining the tools needed to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

Recently, the ministry partnered with the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) and the Agricultural Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme (AIEP) to deliver a transformative Level 1 Sustainable Agriculture Training in Region Six.

Held from 23rd to 27th June at the Little Rock Conference Room in New Amsterdam, the training brought together 23 determined individuals, each eager to gain practical knowledge and skills in sustainable agriculture.

Participants were introduced to a wide range of topics, including organic farming methods, marketing and agribusiness strategies, vertical and urban gardening, harvesting techniques, and hands-on visits to shade houses for real-world exposure.

On 25th June, the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board hosted a special session on the safe and unsafe use of agricultural chemicals.

One participant, Ameir Waldrond, shared how the training has transformed her perspective and opened up a world of opportunities—underscoring the programme’s real-life impact.

“The programme is interesting because I have learned how to plant better than before, in such a way that my garden will improve and I will get more yields. I’ve learned how to create an organic pesticide so as to control the pests that will be on the plants,” she noted.

In addition to vital safety tips, participants were provided with protective gear to support responsible and informed agricultural practices.

According to the ministry, this inclusive initiative not only equips persons with disabilities with valuable agricultural knowledge—it also nurtures entrepreneurship, strengthens independence, and promotes sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative is part of the ministry’s broader commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, delivered through the Learning Lab for Persons Living with Disabilities.

As the ministry expands this training region by region, it continues to plant the seeds of growth, inclusion, and empowerment—ensuring that no one is left behind.
