A devastating fire has left a family of six homeless in East Canje, Berbice, reducing treasured belongings to ashes.
Imran Khan of Lot 61 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, accompanied by his two youngest children, aged eight and eleven, left home around 14:30 hrs on Tuesday to pick up his wife from work at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate. After collecting her, they were heading up the Corentyne when his two older children, aged sixteen and twenty, contacted him to say their house was engulfed in flames.
“I ended up turning back and just drove towards home, and when I reached, I saw the whole building right down to the ground… everything just lying there, everything burned up,” an emotional Khan recalled.
Firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station responded, but the three-bedroom wooden and concrete house had already been consumed.
Khan said the home had no known electrical issues and that the cause of the fire remains unknown.
“I can’t really assess the losses, but it is a lot of investment,” he said, struggling to hold back tears.
