Regional Health Officer hails progress in local surgical care
The Suddie Public Hospital has recorded a significant milestone in healthcare delivery for Region Two, successfully completing 406 surgeries in the first six months of 2025.
Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr. Ranjeev Singh praised the hospital’s surgical team for their dedication and efficiency, particularly given the challenges of operating with only one main surgical theatre.
Despite limited infrastructure, the hospital has been managing both emergency and elective procedures, allowing residents to access critical surgical care within their region.
“Our surgical department continues to operate at full capacity, with emergency cases being handled around the clock and elective surgeries scheduled through our specialized outpatient clinics,” Dr. Singh said.
Breakdown of surgeries performed from January to June includes:
* Obstetrics and Gynecology – 204
* General Surgery – 155
* Orthopedic Surgery – 101
* Pediatric Cases – 42
Dr. Singh emphasized that the Ministry of Health remains committed to enhancing healthcare services at the regional level, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for surgical interventions.
“We are now offering services that were previously unavailable here. This is a direct result of the Government’s commitment to improving healthcare access across Guyana,” he noted.

Suddie Hospital continues to run outpatient specialty clinics on the following days:
* General Surgery – Mondays
* Orthopedics – Tuesdays
* Gynecology – Wednesdays
* Pediatrics – Fridays
Operating theatre schedules are as follows:
* Gynecology – Mondays and Fridays
* General Surgery – Tuesdays and Thursdays
* Orthopedics – Wednesdays
* Pediatric Surgeries – As needed
Dr. Singh encouraged residents to make full use of the available services by visiting the outpatient clinics for assessment and possible surgical referrals.
He also commended the team of doctors, nurses, and scrub technicians who continue to deliver high-quality care despite working under demanding conditions.
“This is a significant step forward for healthcare on the Essequibo Coast. Our people deserve timely, professional surgical care close to home, and we’re proud to be delivering just that,” Dr. Singh added.
