Jamal Green, a 26-year-old mechanic of Durban Street, Lodge, was allegedly murdered on Friday. Police stated that the incident occurred at approximately 13:30 hrs between Robb and Albert Streets, Georgetown.

The suspect, Keon Belgrave, a 30-year-old taxi driver from the Sophia squatting area, was arrested and remains in police custody.

Investigations revealed that the suspect was driving motor car PXX 7379, heading south, while the victim was riding motorcycle CN 9595 behind him, travelling in the same direction. It is alleged that the victim rode up alongside the suspect and remarked that he (the suspect) should have hit him with his car.

The victim then proceeded a short distance ahead and stopped his motorcycle. The suspect also drove forward, stopped where the victim was, and exited his vehicle.

According to a 30-year-old eyewitness, who was at a store at the corner of Robb and Albert Streets, the victim was seen holding a piece of iron and dealt the suspect a lash to his back.

The suspect reportedly returned to his car, retrieved a knife, and approached the victim. A scuffle ensued, during which the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim three times in the back, causing him to collapse.

Emergency medical technicians responded to the scene and rushed the victim to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead by Dr Walcott while receiving treatment.

The suspect was arrested at the scene. A police rank recovered both a knife and an iron object from the location. The scene was processed, and CCTV cameras in the area reportedly captured the scuffle between the victim and the suspect.

The victim’s body is currently at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A video/audio interview was conducted with the suspect. Under caution, he stated that while he was driving south along Albert Street, the victim rode alongside him and accused him of nearly hitting him. An argument ensued, after which both parties continued driving.

At the corner of Robb and Albert Streets, the victim again confronted the suspect with a steel pipe and dealt him a lash across the back before returning to his motorcycle. The suspect said he then armed himself with a knife from his vehicle, and during a subsequent scuffle with the victim, the stabbing occurred.

Investigations are ongoing.
