Guyana and Brazil’s northern state of Roraima have discussed key infrastructure and economic projects in the border town of Lethem, including the expedited completion of the second phase of the Linden–Lethem Road Project, the development of a regional food and livestock processing hub, and the establishment of an integrated energy complex.
The discussion took place during a two-day visit to Guyana by Roraima’s Governor, Antonio Olivério Garcia de Almeida, from July 4–5. The governor, accompanied by senior officials including the Secretaries for Investment Attraction, Agriculture, and Communication, held talks with President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and several Cabinet Ministers at State House in Georgetown.
According to a joint statement issued following the meeting, the integrated energy complex in Lethem will be developed through a public-private partnership and is expected to include facilities for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and other petroleum products.
The proposed food and livestock hub aims to boost agricultural production and exports to the Caribbean and international markets, supporting regional food security goals.
Both sides reiterated the urgency of completing the second phase of the Linden–Lethem Road, seen as critical to improving cross-border connectivity and trade.“
Other areas of cooperation discussed include scholarship and technical exchange programmes between tertiary institutions in Roraima and Guyana, improved customs and immigration systems at the Lethem–Bonfim border, and the early conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding to guide joint efforts.
A joint working group will be established with clear objectives and timelines to advance the initiatives and explore additional areas for bilateral collaboration, the statement said.
