Jagdeo confirms Mark Phillips as PPP’s Prime Ministerial candidate

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, on Wednesday confirmed that Prime Minister Mark Phillips remains the party’s candidate for the upcoming general elections, dismissing rumours suggesting otherwise as opposition-driven disinformation.

At his weekly press briefing at Freedom House, Dr Jagdeo rejected claims that Phillips would be replaced, asserting that the reports are attempts to sow division within the ruling party.

“Mark Phillips is a major asset to this party. He brings credibility, decency, and leadership experience that none of the candidates on the other side can match. We are proud of him and his service to the nation,” Dr Jagdeo said.

The claim originated from Credible Sources, a social media platform linked to the opposition and operated by Opposition Parliamentarian Sherod Duncan. Dr Jagdeo criticised the outlet, describing it as “the least credible in the country,” and said the opposition was resorting to “madness” and “fiction” in the absence of real political traction.

He said, “sensible people should disregard him,” referring to Duncan.

Dr Jagdeo further accused the opposition coalition of being disorganised and presumptive, noting that it was already discussing the allocation of government positions and parliamentary seats despite not winning any elections.

He called the move a “gross disrespect to the electorate,” and said, “Their fear has led to a full-blown panic disorder. They’re negotiating based on delusion, not reality. That is what happens when defeat is staring you in the face.”
