Pupils of May 26 Nursery School in Melanie, East Coast Demerara, now have a safe and colourful new space to play and learn, thanks to the commissioning of a brand-new play park by First Lady Arya Ali.

The project forms part of the government’s National Beautification Project and is the tenth public recreational facility delivered under the initiative. The park, which includes play structures, a gazebo, seating, and lighting, was developed through a collaboration between the Office of the First Lady and the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).

The First Lady, who made the promise to the school during a visit two months ago alongside Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, returned to fulfil that commitment, emphasising that development must always be people-centred.

“Each time we open a new park or public space, it reminds us that apart from roads, bridges, and big buildings, development is also about creating spaces where our children and people can relax, feel safe, and enjoy life,” she said.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Minister Rodrigues, MP Suresh Singh, NDC Chairman Bascom, school staff, parents, and residents of the wider Melanie community.

Teachers at the school say the new facility is more than just a playground — it is an extension of the classroom that will allow students to engage in meaningful, play-based learning.

One of those teachers is Miss Denesha Stewart, who not only teaches at May 26 Nursery but once attended it as a child.

“I attended this school many years ago, so looking back from then to now, I’m very elated with the work that was done,” she said. “The outdoor play equipment will help our children play more creatively, work together, and learn actively. This initiative will have a lasting impact, and we are very much grateful.”

Headmistress Shawndale Glasgow-Barrington echoed the importance of outdoor spaces in early childhood education.

“Today, I am very happy to see that our children can have inclusive learning because our curriculum at nursery focuses on play,” she said. “Our children will be playing through indoor and outdoor activities… they will learn so much from the play area provided to us today.”

The new play park at May 26 Nursery School is part of a growing national effort to integrate child-friendly infrastructure into educational environments. For students, teachers, and families in Melanie, it is not just a new place to play, but a shared investment in childhood development, community well-being, and the promise of a brighter future.
