Fire flattens Corentyne home, two left homeless

Vishal Rameshwar, 39, of Dukestown, Corentyne, is now homeless after a fire completely destroyed the one-bedroom wooden house he and his brother were occupying.

The tragedy occurred around 16:00 hrs on Wednesday, 25 June.

According to Rameshwar, he had stepped out briefly and, upon returning, noticed thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

“Me come out from me house about 4 o’clock. When me coming back, me see a set of black smoke. When me come in and watch the house, is bare fire. I don’t know how the fire take place. I don’t know nothing. None of the two of us were home.”

The distraught man shared that he lost everything, including his clothing, household appliances, and two brand-new sponges he had just bought.

“Me get a music set, clothes, gas bottle, gas stove, me divider… reasonable portion of things destroyed for me… and me had two brand-new sponge me buy the other day — all that burn up.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown, especially since the building had no electricity.
