The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is set to ignite the ring once again as it stages the 2025 National Novice Championships from July 25 to 27 at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
Named in honour of the late world champion Andrew ‘Six-Head’ Lewis, the Novice Championships serve as the first official stepping stone for young fighters transitioning into amateur boxing. The event plays a crucial role in identifying and developing athletes for the national programme.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle emphasised that the championships serve as a nursery for raw young talent in Guyana.
Last year, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Boxing Gym showcased its dominance by winning the Best Overall Team title. Jagwan Milo was recognised as the Best Novice Boxer, while Ryan Rogers of the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym earned the Best Schoolboy Boxer award. The Best Female Boxer accolade went to rising star Kenisha Plass, highlighting the event’s commitment to promoting talent across all divisions.
This year’s championships will see the return of the Republican Boxing Gym and are expected to attract competitors from all ten administrative regions of Guyana.
