
Motorcyclist Jamal Hughes, a resident of Glasgow Village, East Berbice, died today following a collision with a cow on the Stanleytown Public Road in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to a police release, the incident involved motorcycle CP 2700, which was being driven by Hughes, with 24-year-old Marashia Dehart of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, as the pillion rider, and an unbranded cow.
Initial investigations revealed that Hughes and Dehart were proceeding south along the roadway, allegedly at a fast rate, when the motorcycle collided with the cow, which was crossing from east to west.
As a result of the collision, both Hughes and Dehart were thrown onto the roadway and sustained injuries. They were picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Hughes was seen and examined by a doctor on duty, who treated him for injuries to his head and other parts of his body. He later succumbed to his injuries at approximately 01:55 hrs.
Dehart was also examined by the same doctor, treated for minor injuries, and subsequently discharged.
The body of the deceased is currently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
