A national policy has been launched aimed at engaging men and boys as key partners in the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV), highlighting their role not only in addressing the issue but also in promoting healing and accountability.
The “Bridging the Gap Policy,” introduced by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SO&DVPU) on Friday, seeks to involve men and boys in the national response to GBV by fostering self-awareness, emotional stability, and social responsibility.
Speaking at the launch held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud said the policy has been carefully thought out and crafted to be comprehensive and inclusive.
She added that the initiative was shaped through extensive engagement with men across society to ensure it resonates widely.
“Its inclusivity stems from the extensive consultation and engagement with men from all walks of life during its creation, ensuring it resonates with everyone.”
The policy challenges the notion that men and boys are solely perpetrators or bystanders in GBV and instead recognises them as critical to the solution. “The policy has been so carefully crafted that there is nothing here that gives men a negative label,” Persaud stated.
“Bridging the Gap” aims to empower men and boys to define manhood through values such as respect, emotional responsibility, and care for others. “At its core, ‘Bridging the Gap’ isn’t just about stopping violence. It’s about helping men and boys grow into well-rounded individuals. This means giving them the power to make their own choices and decide what it means to be a man, based on values like respect, taking responsibility for their feelings, and caring for each other,” she said.
The policy includes seven integrated actions, such as the BRAVE Programme for personal development, trauma-informed education for offenders, public awareness campaigns, youth-led media literacy, workplace GBV awareness, mental health support, and initiatives promoting positive fatherhood.
Also attending the event were Dr. Cona Husbands, Manager of the SO&DVPU; Adel Lilly, Manager of the Gender Affairs Bureau; and several prominent men from various sectors who endorsed the comprehensive policy framework.
