The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has taken another step forward in its preparations for upcoming elections, with several critical administrative matters addressed during its statutory meeting held on Tuesday.
According to Commissioner Sase Gunraj, who was nominated by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), the Commission approved the appointments of Returning Officers (ROs) and Supernumerary Returning Officers (SROs). These officials play a vital role in the conduct of elections, overseeing the polling process within various electoral districts.
Gunraj also reported that the GECOM Secretariat has committed to developing and disseminating detailed protocols for the secure movement of Statements of Poll (SOPs) from polling stations to the relevant authorities. Importantly, these protocols will be made publicly available via the Commission’s website, aiming to boost transparency and public trust in the electoral process.
Further discussions included the identification and readiness of office spaces for ROs and SROs to conduct their work efficiently, as well as plans for a formal briefing by the Secretariat to all political parties contesting the elections.
An update was also provided on the ongoing implementation of GECOM’s approved work plan, which outlines key timelines and tasks in the lead-up to the polls.
Gunraj emphasised that the Commission remains focused on ensuring transparency, fairness, and operational readiness as Guyana prepares for yet another democratic exercise.
