Nazim Hamid, a 21-year-old mechanic from Brighton Village, West Bank Berbice, allegedly drowned around 16:00 hrs on Sunday at Coomacka Mines, Upper Demerara River.
The matter was reported to the police, and ranks visited the scene shortly after.
According to a police release, a 16-year-old female student from Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden, said she and Nazim were in a relationship, and he would normally visit her on weekends.
The student said Nazim visited Linden on Saturday. The following day, at about 15:30 hrs, she, Nazim, and some friends visited the Coomacka Mines Beach (Upper Demerara River) to swim.
She stated that Nazim began swimming towards the centre of the river, after which she saw him begin to sink. She shouted for help, but before anyone could respond, Nazim’s body disappeared below the surface.
The student further said that, with the help of public-spirited persons in the area, they searched along the river near the incident site, but were unable to locate Nazim’s body.
Investigations are in progress.
