Norton stands firm on campaign promises

Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton is resolute on his party’s plans to focus on the development of the country’s human resources as well as continue infrastructural development.
As political parties gear up for the campaign trail ahead of the 2025 General and Regional elections in September, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) is adamant about placing more resources into the hands of citizens.
“We have outlined clearly where we want to take Guyana. We want to put resources in the hands of the Guyanese people. In that regard, we said we will do cash transfers; we don’t call it cash grants because it’s not really a grant, it’s the people’s money. We will transfer money to the people directly and indirectly,” Norton told Ignite News.
The Opposition Leader noted the economic feasibility of giving a $10,000 subsidy to persons to aid with their electricity bills. He said that these persons would receive this money but would be responsible for paying the difference. Likewise, citizens would also receive $5,000 to subsidise their water consumption cost.
“We have got to take an economic approach which allows us to remove the burden or reduce the burden on the people of Guyana and to use the resources to help the people of Guyana,” Norton posited.
He underscored the importance of human resource development and said will be investing a lot of attention there through not neglecting infrastructural development.
The opposition leader said that his party has also outlined a rent-to-own housing scheme programme. Persons, particularly young people who cannot afford a mortgage or lack the resources to finance the building of their home, can access housing with the payment of a small rent for the property which they will eventually own.
Norton dubbed these and other party plans as economically feasible and said he does not believe the criticisms that the country could not afford such contributions to citizens.
