The Alliance For Change (AFC) is calling on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to appoint an independent legal adviser.
The AFC, in a statement, said it is uncomfortable with the current alleged involvement of the Attorney General in advising the Commission.
The party stressed that the legal adviser must be professionally qualified, non-partisan, and firmly committed to upholding fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
“The integrity of our electoral system must not be compromised,” the statement emphasised. “It is in GECOM’s own interest, and that of the nation, that this matter be addressed urgently and decisively.”
The AFC added that it is available to engage further with the Commission should any clarification be required.
Attorney-at-law Kurt Anthony Da Silva, who previously served in the position, was terminated in April this year.
Da Silva has since filed a defamation lawsuit against GECOM and its Chief Election Officer, Vishnu Persaud, over statements related to the non-renewal of his contract.
According to court documents filed in the High Court, Da Silva claims that public statements made by the Commission and Persaud have damaged his personal and professional reputation.
