The University of Guyana (UG) will reopen its application portal today, after having closed it on May 16. The university reported receiving over 20,000 applications in the first month of offering free tuition, and this overwhelming response prompted the closure.
However, due to a number of requests by students and other stakeholders, the university announced that it will reopen the portal for the 2025/2026 Academic Year for a few programmes with space from midnight today to Monday, June 2.
“Given that the most competitive programmes are already oversubscribed by several hundred students, only specific programmes will be reopened for new applicants during this short period,” the university said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the application process for continuing students will open on June 16 and will run until August 1.
Additionally, Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) students writing exams this year were encouraged to apply for admission pending their examination results and indicate to the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) that they wish to have their results shared with the University directly by CXC to save time.
The university indicated that some programmes will allow provisional acceptance pending receipt of grades.
Applicants whose applications have already been submitted are asked to note that responses will be posted from the second week in June through August 2025.
The university has also indicated that this year, prospective students will have a two-week window to accept the place offered due to the high application rate.
Persons are also urged to check to ensure that they have fully completed the application process, as there is a high number of initiated but incomplete applications in addition to the high number of those already submitted.
