The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved a workplan for the conduct of General and Regional Elections, which are scheduled for September 1, 2025.

According to a release, the decision was taken at a statutory meeting held on May 29, where the Commission endorsed the plan prepared by Chief Election Officer Vishnu Persaud.

“In this regard, the GECOM Secretariat is authorised to proceed with implementation of the tasks delineated in the workplan to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner,” the release stated.

Political parties seeking to contest the upcoming polls will be required to submit their Lists of Candidates on July 14, 2025 — designated Nomination Day. “The respective statutory forms for the submission of Lists of Candidates are accessible on GECOM’s website at www.gecom.org.gy,” the release said.

Additionally, applications for allocation of party symbols must be submitted by June 22, 2025, the Commission advised.

The Commission noted that it has been carrying out continuous registration since January 2023. A short Claims and Objections exercise will be held from June 16 to 20 to facilitate the finalisation of the Official Lists of Electors (OLE), a legal prerequisite for the polls.

“Eligible persons who will be 18 years and older by June 30, 2025 and have not been registered can apply for registration during that period to be included in the OLE to be eligible to vote in the 1st September elections,” the release stated.

“Persons who are already registered can apply for (i) correction of incorrect particulars on their National Identification Cards, (ii) name change if they have changed their name(s) since they were registered, and (iii) transfers if they have changed their addresses since they were registered,” it added.
