Travellers to CJIA urged to plan ahead amid weekend road works, possible delays

Travellers to Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) this weekend could face delays of up to four hours due to overnight road works on the East Bank Demerara corridor, authorities said on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, trial milling and paving works will be conducted along a 200-metre stretch in Coverden from Friday to Sunday. These works, which form part of the broader East Bank Demerara Road Improvement Project, are scheduled to occur nightly from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, during which only single-lane traffic will be allowed.

As a result, motorists and pedestrians are being urged to exercise increased caution, obey traffic signage, and follow the directions of traffic personnel stationed at the work site to ensure safety and minimise disruption.

The ministry emphasised that the works are critical for enhancing the long-term durability and safety of one of the country’s most vital transportation routes, which links Georgetown to its main international airport. Oversight for the works is being provided by Sheladia Associates Inc., a U.S.-based engineering consultancy engaged to ensure high standards and efficiency.

“The ministry apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to improve the road network for safer and more efficient travel,” the ministry noted in an official statement.

For additional information or assistance, members of the public can contact the Community Liaison Officer at +592-656-7429 or Sheladia Associates at +592-728-2031.

While temporary disruptions are expected, the ministry reminds road users that the ongoing upgrades will ultimately lead to smoother, safer, and more reliable travel along this critical corridor.
