Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that all Guyanese of a certain age will one day own their own homes, as part of a wide-ranging development vision set out by the government.

Speaking at the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) weekly press conference at Freedom House on Thursday, Dr Jagdeo outlined key elements of the administration’s plans ahead of the upcoming Independence celebrations, which this year will be hosted in Region Six.

“You will hear about our plans for the creation of a programme that would ultimately result in every Guyanese who is of a certain age owning a home of their own,” Dr Jagdeo said. He emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader commitment to improving the lives of citizens through targeted investments and economic reforms.

The Vice President highlighted the government’s focus on massive but inclusive economic expansion.

“As we approach these Independence celebrations, you’re going to hear about our vision to support a massive economic expansion in the future—but not just economic expansion—broad-based economic expansion that will then yield the benefits that would allow us to support the development needs of our people,” he said.

Dr Jagdeo also spoke about the importance of clear planning and delivery, stating that the PPP remains one of the only political parties that consistently lays out a comprehensive, forward-looking agenda. He noted that such plans were crucial for empowering Guyanese to make informed decisions about their futures.

“You’ll hear about the financial empowerment of our people and expanded economic opportunities for them,” he added. “You’ll hear about the expansion of investment in security because safety and security are vital for the future—job creation, wealth creation, closing the divide between the hinterland and the coast.”

The Vice President further underscored that Independence celebrations offer more than ceremonial value—they provide a national moment to reflect on the country’s progress and future direction. He stressed that President Irfaan Ali’s upcoming address would speak to this vision, supported by contributions from ministers across the regions.
