Derrick John: NTC a crucial platform for dialogue, empowerment and development planning

National Toshaos Council (NTC), Chairman Derrick John, has hailed the annual toshaos conference as an effective means for Indigenous people’s dialogue.

Addressing scores of leaders during the opening ceremony of the conference on Monday, John, who is also toshao of Moraikobai, urged that appreciation and recognition be shown for the opportunities being provided through the conference.

“Nowhere in the world do we have this opportunity, and I want to ask you leaders to appreciate this unique opportunity that we, as Indigenous people, experience here in Guyana. This happens nowhere else in the entire globe, where we can sit and deliberate… and be able to bring to the forefront issues that are affecting our people. And so I want to encourage all of us here to make good use of these five days that we’ll be deliberating in this room – to make an imprint,” he said.

John continued by stating that Guyana is currently experiencing one of the most exciting periods in its history, with tremendous resources being poured into Indigenous communities.

He pointed out that he has had the opportunity to visit many hinterland communities and is amazed by the improvements seen.

John said this speaks volumes for the NTC, which is often accused of allowing organisations to dictate its affairs.

He made it clear that Indigenous people have their own rights and are a determined people.

This year’s NTC Conference is being held from 19 to 23 May, under the theme, “Robust Governance for Sustainable Village Development.”

This vital gathering of village leaders provides a critical opportunity for genuine dialogue and collective decision-making on the most pressing issues affecting Indigenous communities.
