Daniel Wharton, better known as “Baby Skello”, was arrested today in connection with a vulgar song about the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi that drew strong criticism from the Hindu community.
There have been widespread calls for Skello to be brought before the law.
The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), in strongly condemning the song, affirmed that all legal avenues would be explored under the laws of Guyana to address this matter.
The Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) Guyana also urged the ERC and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take swift and decisive action against Skello and all those who facilitated the abomination.
Similar calls and condemnations were issued by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha and the Guyana Pandits’ Council. Several pandits participated in a peaceful demonstration on Saturday, condemning the vulgar and despicable lyrics of the song by Skello.
Hindus across Guyana have expressed growing concern about “Hinduphobia,” particularly in light of several social media posts that inaccurately portray the religion and cast a negative light on the rituals and practices of Hinduism.
The ERC stated that it would intensify efforts to engage with stakeholders, including artistes, producers, and media platforms, to promote awareness of the importance of religious respect.
The commission noted that educational campaigns will be launched to reinforce these values, especially among younger audiences and content creators.
