Distribution of the students’ Because We Care cash grant will begin on Monday, 12 May, Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced today on the sidelines of the launch of the Ministry of Education’s Arrival Day Village at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
The minister stated that distribution will begin in Regions Nine and Seven next week, followed by Regions Two and Five the following week. The remaining regions will be served thereafter.
Every school-aged child will receive GY$55,000—GY$50,000 as the cash grant and GY$5,000 in the form of a uniform voucher.
The minister reminded the public that, to be eligible, the child must be on the school’s register, which must be verified by the region’s education department and the Central Ministry.
Parents or guardians must present their identification cards, driver’s licence, or be verified by a village toshao or leader in the absence of these documents. In cases where a parent or guardian is unavailable to collect the grant, an authorisation letter may be presented.
“We are going to be issuing what that should look like. It is an extremely smooth process,” the minister stated.
Minister Manickchand urged parents and guardians to stay informed through the ministry’s platforms to follow distribution schedules.
“You would have to follow very carefully online, on all our platforms… when your region is going to be served and where each school will be served,” she noted.
She added that there are more locations available this year for grant collection and assured that robust security systems are in place to ensure safety.
“This year we have the most locations as possible. We have the full cooperation of the police, as well as private security services that will help us with making sure this is all done safely, and so we’re looking forward to beginning this grant. I want to re-emphasise, if you don’t see your region starting on Monday… we are going to get to every single child before the beginning of school … but there is a schedule…,” the minister said.
