Deputy Superintendent of Police Dexter Brown, 37, died this morning following a car crash along the Montrose Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

According to police reports, Brown, who lived at Toucan Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown, was driving motorcar PAG 6458 at around 01:20 hrs when he lost control of the vehicle. The car collided with a concrete bridge, flipped over, and became submerged in a trench.

Public-spirited citizens assisted police in pulling Brown from the submerged vehicle. He was unconscious and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the vehicle, owned by a 30-year-old businesswoman from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, was allegedly being driven at a fast rate when the accident occurred.

The wrecked vehicle was later removed from the scene and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where it will be examined by a licensing and certifying officer. Brown’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
