Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh has assured citizens that there have been no adjustments to the current speed limits governing various zones across the country.
Speaking to Ignite News, he offered the clarification in light of recent concerns raised by citizens regarding the speed limits associated with the Electronic Ticketing System.
“The speed limits that prevail across the country are the ones that the Ministry of Home Affairs after consultations with key stakeholders and approval from cabinet had announced in accordance with the 2nd schedule of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act Chapter 51:02 which speaks speed limits for Motor Cars, Hire Cars, Motor Cycles and all other vehicles.”
These concerns were prompted by an infographic circulating on social media, which contained fabricated speed limits for several districts. The Traffic Chief made it clear that the document was not created by the government or the traffic department and does not represent any changes to the official speed limits.
Singh also explained that there is no current plan to update the speed limits, but it is something that may be considered in the future, taking into account that some existing speed limits for certain zones are extremely low.
