With major world powers vying for investment opportunities in Guyana, Attorney General Anil Nandlall has contended that this is a testament to Guyana being a high-performing stock.

The Attorney General made this observation at the opening of the Friendship Magistrate’s Court on Monday. His comments came against the backdrop of a recent exchange of words between the US and China, with both nations declaring their close partnership with Guyana and their support for its developmental plans.

“There are two global powers in the world today: the United States and China. I am sure you have been reading in the news that there is actually a competition between these two global powers—a competition to invest in Guyana. The two global giants are trading words over investing and investments in Guyana. These are things for us to celebrate,” Nandlall said, as they indicate beyond a doubt that something special is happening in the country.

He told the gathering of judicial officials and special invitees that Guyana is currently at a pivotal juncture in its history as one of the most transformational countries in the world.

He also noted that it is no coincidence that three US Secretaries of State have visited Guyana in the last five years, compared to previous times when hardly any high-ranking officials visited.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during his recent visit, asserted that Guyana is one of the most exciting places to be, as it is among the very few countries experiencing massive transformation.

It was also during that visit that the US official reiterated his country’s non-support for what was described as China’s predatory investment practices, whereby large sums of money are offered to countries for projects under high loan repayment schemes.

China has refuted these US accusations. Regarding Guyana, it stated that it has always prioritised the China-Guyana friendship, highlighting its participation in some of the most transformative projects in the country’s history.

China noted that Rome was not built in a day and affirmed that it will continue to contribute to Guyana’s transformation.
