Former Finance Minister Winston Jordan was charged on Monday with misconduct in public office over the sale of state land at a significantly undervalued price.
He made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Jordan, who served under the previous APNU+AFC government, is accused of signing a vesting order that facilitated the sale of five acres of land—valued at $150 million — for just 2.4 million.
The property is part of Plantation Goedverwagting and Sparendaam on the country’s East Coast of Demerara.
The alleged offence took place between February 25 and June 11, 2020, according to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), the anti-corruption agency within the Guyana Police Force.
Jordan was not required to enter a plea and was granted bail of $150,000 by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore. He is represented by Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde and attorney-at-law Dawn Cush. His next court appearance is set for April 23.
SOCU contends that the land was sold at a price far below its true value.
