Public Infrastructure Minister Juan Edghill has assured truckers that the MV Kanawan, which typically operates between Parika and Supenaam, will soon resume service.
The truckers, who primarily transport produce, met with the minister outside the Parika Police Station on Wednesday evening to highlight ongoing challenges in securing space on vessels.
Some reported difficulties with online booking, while others stated they were placed on standby or even turned away due to limited capacity.
Additionally, truckers expressed frustration over traffic congestion and delays.
After listening to their concerns, Minister Edghill reassured them that repairs on the MV Kanawan are in progress and that the vessel is expected to be operational within a few days.
“We are getting back the Kanawan in another couple of days. I hope it can be ready within a week so we can address these issues. In the meantime, we understand it’s paddy season, and you all know we are even transporting paddy at a subsidised rate. There is no need for agitation or for anyone to think the government is punishing you,” Edghill told the truckers.
He acknowledged the current challenges and emphasised that the Transport and Harbours Department is actively working to manage the situation in the absence of the MV Kanawan and other vessels.
The MV Kanawan has undergone significant repairs in the past.
Edghill also noted that the online booking system was introduced to streamline the process and improve efficiency for truckers.
