Veronica Rondon Alfaro, a female Venezuelan national from San Felix/El Dorado, Venezuela, was arrested by ranks from Eteringbang Police Station last Thursday and charged today with the offence of ‘Attempt to Commit Murder’.
According to a police release, the charge was filed contrary to Section 103 (c) of the Criminal Law (Offence) Act, Chapter 8:01 of the Laws of Guyana.
At around 11:30 hrs today, the accused appeared (virtually) in the Kamarang Magistrate Court before Magistrate Rabindranaught Singh. The charge of ‘Attempt to Commit Murder’ was read to her. She was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to June 17 for continuation.
Alfaro is accused of attempting to murder Frederick Junior Stanford, a 36-year-old businessman from Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, on 9 March 2025, at Mango Landing, Region Seven.
Investigations disclosed that the victim and the suspect shared an intimate relationship for the past year. According to the businessman, the Venezuelan woman left his place of business and went to a nearby shop owned by a 30-year-old male Venezuelan national, where she and the shop owner consumed alcohol.
At about 23:00 hrs on 9 March, the woman returned to the victim’s place of business, which was closed, and knocked on the door. The businessman reportedly told her (the suspect) “to go back where you went.”
Subsequently, the businessman opened his door, and the Venezuelan woman rushed in with a one-litre Coca-Cola bottle containing gasoline, which she allegedly threw on the victim. A scuffle then ensued between the victim and the suspect, causing some of the remaining gasoline to fall on the suspect.
Thereafter, the woman lit a lighter, causing both parties to be physically burned about the body.
Public-spirited citizens intervened and transported both the suspect and the victim to Eteringbang Police Station, where they were medevaced to Georgetown via a Guyana Defence Force aircraft to seek medical attention.
