Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has confirmed that the government has hired the US firm Continental Strategy LLC to lobby for Guyana’s interests in Washington, DC.
“Yes, we hired a lobbying firm,” Dr. Jagdeo told reporters at his press briefing last Thursday. “It is critical that we have lobbying firms, particularly when we are confronted with this threat from Venezuela,” the Vice President added.
The Continental Strategy deal was signed by Guyana’s Foreign Ministry and is valued at $50,000 per month for six months, according to the filing, The Gazette reported.
It noted that Carlos Trujillo, a former Republican congressman from Florida who served as Trump’s ambassador to the Organisation of American States, filed paperwork with the Department of Justice.
Ahead of the filing, Dr. Jagdeo had provided some context for the hire.
“Clearly, we have to remain engaged with the US government in ensuring that there is, for the Caribbean countries particularly, a favourable environment for our trade with the US. You know, we’ve had some special treatment with the US for a long time, and we hope that those don’t get eroded,” he informed reporters at his 10 February press briefing.
The company’s website states that it specialises in advising and representing clients across a wide range of issues in Washington, DC, Florida, and throughout Latin America.
“Our team has decades of experience working in state and federal government, lobbying, and advising on policy, politics, and communications. Our relationships with policymakers, legislators, elected officials, and staff have been cultivated over decades while working in the executive and legislative branches of federal and state government,” Continental Strategy said.
