Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal has assured residents of ‘AA’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD), that the new Great Diamond to Craig road project is on track for completion, promising enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times for thousands of commuters.
He was at the time addressing residents on National Development Initiatives on Wednesday, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to connect directly with citizens on national development matters.
The minister was joined by Director of Community Development at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Gladwin Charles; Deputy Director of Projects, Intakab Indarjeet, and other officials, as he discussed a range of topics, including investments across various sectors, the raised income tax threshold, increased pensions, and the creation of more job opportunities.
He also drew attention to the Mandela-to-Eccles four-lane highway, which has been extended to Great Diamond.
In his address on the water sector, Minister Croal explained that significant improvements were underway to enhance access and quality.
Notably, the current administration has removed the Value Added Tax (VAT) from water charges, provided water subsidies for pensioners, and upgraded the water treatment system in Eccles.
He specifically highlighted the government’s focus on economic relief, stating that several tax burdens imposed by the previous coalition government had been removed under President Ali’s administration over the past four years, leading to an increase in disposable income for citizens.
“Government and leadership require making bold decisions,” Minister Croal emphasised, underscoring the significance of these investments and the government’s commitment to engaging directly with the people to ensure inclusive governance.
On housing and infrastructure, the minister highlighted the government’s efforts to allocate thousands of house lots on the East Bank in the past four years, along with ongoing infrastructure works to support these developments.
The session concluded with an open discussion, providing residents the opportunity to voice their concerns and receive direct responses from the minister.
