The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has expressed concern about events being advertised as celebrations of Phagwah, which carry messages promoting alcohol, vulgarity, and other activities that are not in keeping with the observance of the festival.
In a statement, the Sabha said that although Phagwah is a joyous and unifying festival that transcends all barriers, its spiritual context must be respected.
“As the Hindu community, we take deep offence at this level of disrespect towards our festival of Phagwah. Phagwah must be enjoyed by all, but in a respectful way, expressing the messages of love, spirituality, and fraternity. Alcohol and vulgarity have no place in our festival.”
The Sabha requested that all advertisements featuring alcohol, non-vegetarian foods, and vulgar or lewd activities should not be associated with or marketed as Phagwah or Holi events.
“We have asked the Guyana Police Force to intervene, as we do each year, and to request that individuals promoting these events desist from linking them to Phagwah. Additionally, we are asking beverage companies to be responsible and not promote alcohol as part of a Phagwah celebration. We also encourage all members of the Hindu community to take a vigilant stance and report any such activities,” the statement concluded.
