Jagdeo: Opposition piggy-backing on government’s successes to gain support

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has accused the political opposition of piggy-backing on the government’s initiatives to gain political mileage, asserting that they have no plans for Guyana’s development.
Speaking at his weekly news conference at Freedom House today, the Vice President criticised the Opposition’s opportunism.
“They have a mindset against agriculture because they think it is the PPP people,” he said, citing some of the government’s major investments in the sector, including Black Bush Polder.
However, he pointed out that despite this, AFC Leader Nigel Hughes has been claiming credit for the government’s achievements.
Jagdeo also noted that the Opposition has only now expressed support for rice farmers after they raised concerns about paddy prices.
He explained that millers had initially intended to pay farmers between $3,500 and $3,700 per bag of paddy, but Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha intervened to ensure they received a minimum payment of $4,000 per bag.
Using another example to support his argument, Jagdeo highlighted the government’s prior commitment to upgrading the Le Repentir Cemetery. He noted that Opposition Member of Parliament Volda Lawrence tabled a motion in the National Assembly to create the false impression that her party was responsible for the initiative.
“So, when people see us doing it, they will think Volda caused it,” he said.
He also pointed to the Opposition’s motion to remove sirens and flashing lights from unauthorised/private vehicles.
“They know President Ali has already said that it is illegal. You don’t need to go with a motion to Parliament to do that, you just need to call on the Commissioner [of Police] to do it,” he said.
