As Guyana approaches general elections this year, Working People’s Alliance (WPA) Executive Member Tacuma Ogunseye has called for unity among political parties in response to Venezuelan aggression.
During a press conference today, Ogunseye stressed that Venezuela must not be allowed to perceive disunity in Guyana during the political season. He acknowledged that division often arises among citizens during election periods but emphasised that, given Venezuela’s threats to the country’s oil assets, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, a united front is essential.
While national leaders can demonstrate unity in times of crisis, Ogunseye highlighted the need for similar solidarity at the grassroots level, where the masses will play a crucial role in defending the country, whether on the military or political front.
In addition to military preparedness and mobilising diplomatic support, Ogunseye underscored the importance of large, multiracial demonstrations to present a unified stance on the border issue. He expressed concern that Venezuela may be exploiting Guyana’s political climate to force the country back to the negotiation table.
Ogunseye believes Venezuela may be testing whether it can pressure the Guyanese government into compromising on the border, especially since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has not yet ruled on the Essequibo controversy.
He commended President Irfaan Ali and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton for their unified stance against Venezuelan intimidation. The AFC, ANUG, and other political leaders have also expressed strong support for the people and government of Guyana. The country continues to receive robust backing from international, regional, and local partners following Venezuela’s incursion into Guyana’s exclusive maritime space last Sunday.
