FITUG, ANUG stand with Guyana after Venezuela’s incursion

The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) has expressed serious concern over Venezuela’s recent military presence in Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

In a press release issued on Monday, FITUG stated that this action raises significant apprehension about respect for Guyana’s sovereign rights over its territorial waters and natural resources.

The Federation extended its support to the government and people of Guyana in addressing the military incursion, emphasizing that it challenges the country’s established rights within its EEZ and its engagement in offshore oil and gas development. FITUG expressed deep concern over Venezuela’s actions and their implications for international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which affirms Guyana’s rights over its waters and seabed.

Additionally, FITUG reminded the international community of Guyana’s legitimate entitlement to explore, exploit, and manage its resources within its EEZ. It urged Venezuela to acknowledge and respect Guyana’s sovereignty, refraining from actions that may escalate tensions and hinder a peaceful resolution to the ongoing dispute.

Furthermore, the Federation encouraged trade unions, civil society organizations, and concerned individuals to unite in support of the rights of the Guyanese people regarding their natural resources.

FITUG reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a peaceful resolution through the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Guyana’s position has been recognized, ensuring that any outcome is grounded in respect for international law.

It also called on Venezuela to uphold the principles of international law and refrain from further acts of aggression. FITUG underscored that the people of Guyana are resilient and committed to their sovereignty and development and reiterated its dedication to supporting these principles.

A New and United Guyana (ANUG) has also condemned the presence of a Venezuelan naval vessel in Guyana’s offshore maritime zone.

In a press release issued on Saturday, ANUG described Venezuela’s actions as a clear violation of international law and the principles governing maritime territories among law-abiding nations.

The party urged the Venezuelan government and people to adhere to the ongoing legal process before the ICJ and to desist from all acts of aggression. ANUG reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Government and people of Guyana.

The statement further emphasized ANUG’s commitment to Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing solidarity with the government in seeking a peaceful resolution through legitimate legal avenues.

ANUG called on all Guyanese to unite in national solidarity, denounce the Venezuelan Navy’s aggression, and collaborate with national, regional, and international partners to secure a peaceful resolution.
